Read Aloud text: a harbour lantern custom in a fishing village

Every autumn, the fishing village of Portmellin lights a row of lanterns along its harbour wall, one for each boat that went to sea that year. Nobody is sure when the custom began. Today few families still fish, yet children carry the lanterns anyway, because the ceremony has become a way of saying who the village is.
