Visitor notice: seasonal path closure at Kestrel Point Nature Reserve
Kestrel Point Nature Reserve: Seasonal Changes to Access
From 1 March to 31 July, the shingle path between the lighthouse car park and the eastern hide will be closed to all visitors. Ringed plovers and little terns lay their eggs directly on the shingle, where the eggs are almost impossible to see, and a single careless footstep can destroy a nest. Last year, wardens found that several nests close to the path had been abandoned.
During the closure, visitors can still reach the eastern hide by the inland boardwalk. This route adds about fifteen minutes to the walk but passes the reed beds, where marsh harriers are often seen hunting. The western hide and the visitor centre remain open as usual.
Dogs are welcome on the inland boardwalk but must be kept on a short lead at all times. At weekends, volunteers will be at the start of the boardwalk to answer questions and lend binoculars.
If you see anyone entering the closed area, please do not approach them; instead, report it to staff at the visitor centre.
