Man: You look shattered. Did the ring give you a bad score again? Woman: Fifty-eight out of a hundred. Which is absurd, because I woke up feeling perfectly all right. It was only when I looked at my phone over breakfast that I started to feel tired. Man: That's rather telling, isn't it? Woman: I know. And I didn't even get it because I sleep badly. At my last check-up the doctor said my resting heart rate was on the high side, and I thought having the figures to hand would help me keep an eye on it. The sleep part was just a bonus. Man: And now the bonus is running your life. Woman: It's not running my life. But I have started going to bed at nine to push the numbers up, and then I lie there wide awake, fretting about the score, which obviously makes it worse. Man: So take the thing off for a fortnight and see whether you actually feel any different. Woman: I did think about that. But I'd lose two weeks of heart-rate readings, and that's the bit I really need. What I'm going to do is switch the sleep score off in the settings, so it just isn't there in the morning. Man: Right. As long as you can resist switching it back on.
