The end of the ladder?

The end of the ladder?

For our grandparents' generation, a career was often imagined as a ladder: you joined an organisation near the bottom and, with patience and a little luck, climbed steadily towards the top. Few young people today think about their working lives in those terms. [1] anything, the ladder has been replaced by something closer to a climbing wall, on which people move sideways, and occasionally even downwards, in search of a better route. Careers advisers are keen to point out that this is not necessarily a loss. A sideways move into a different department, they argue, can broaden a person's skills far more than a promotion within a narrow specialism ever would.
