Packing for three months
Anyone who has dragged an overstuffed suitcase up a flight of station steps will understand why seasoned backpackers make such a virtue of learning to travel [1]. The rule most of them follow is simple: lay out everything you think you will need, then put half of it back in the cupboard. It sounds drastic, but few return home wishing they had brought more. Clothes can be washed in a hotel sink, and almost anything that has genuinely been forgotten can be bought along the way, often more cheaply than at home.
