Asking why
Asking why
Ask a group of scientists what first drew them to their field and few will mention career prospects or salaries. Far more often, they describe a childhood spent taking clocks apart or collecting beetles in jam jars, driven by nothing more than [1] (CURIOUS). That early impulse rarely disappears. Even researchers with decades of experience talk about the thrill of an unexpected result, and many say that the day they stop wondering how things work will be the day to retire. Funding committees, one suspects, would do well to remember this.
