Counting butterflies
Counting butterflies
Every summer, thousands of volunteers around the country spend fifteen minutes in a garden, park or field counting the butterflies they see. The results make sobering reading. Numbers of several once-common species have fallen [1] (DRAMA) since the survey began, and scientists believe that the disappearance of wildflowers is largely to blame. Yet the count also offers some grounds for hope: in areas where local councils have stopped mowing roadside verges so often, butterflies have frequently returned within a few seasons.
