Swapping the holidays
Swapping the holidays
When the government agency where Farah Qureshi works reviewed its leave policy last year, it made a small change with large consequences. Staff may now exchange up to three of the public holidays in the national calendar for days of their own choosing, whether to mark a religious festival, a national day from their family's country of origin or a local tradition from the region where they grew up. The right is now [1] (SHRINE) in the agency's staff handbook, which means that managers can no longer refuse a request simply because the date is inconvenient. 'Before, you had to ask for it as a favour,' Qureshi says. 'Now it's an entitlement.'
