Part 1 extract: Two friends discuss a sleep-tracking ring

Synthetic practice recording. This is not official exam audio.

Read listening script

Woman: You're looking well. Is that the famous ring on your finger? The one that tells you how you've slept? Man: It is. Though I'm thinking of putting it in a drawer. When I first got it, I loved it, all those graphs. But a few weeks in, I noticed something odd. I'd wake up feeling perfectly fine, check the app, see a score of fifty-something, and suddenly I'd feel dreadful for the rest of the day. It's as if I'd stopped trusting my own body until the ring confirmed it. Woman: That's a bit worrying. Man: And the ridiculous part is that I now lie awake worrying about getting a good score. Which, obviously, ruins the score. Woman: Can I say something, though? I don't think the ring is really your problem. You told me last month you'd started answering work messages in bed because it was the only quiet time you had. The ring's just telling you what you'd already know if you stopped long enough to notice. Man: That's a bit harsh. Woman: Maybe. But putting it in a drawer won't change that, will it? I'd keep wearing it for a fortnight and simply not open the app until the end. Man: Now that I could probably manage.
